Loughborough College are playing their part in tackling digital poverty and supporting employability with their donation of 30 refurbished laptops to The Carpenter’s Arms.
It means that the 29 residents at our Six Hills property in Loughborough can access IT equipment to help support their progress towards living independently, particularly when it comes to acquiring new employment-related skills. It represents a huge improvement in resources available to our residents where, until recently, the only IT equipment available was a single laptop donated some three years ago.
CEO of The Carpenter’s Arms Richard said: “Many of our residents have experienced chaotic lives from an early age which naturally impacts their opportunity and ability to learn. Loughborough College’s very generous donation of 30 laptops means we have a reliable bank of IT equipment which the men can book out in the same way as a library book, and can use to build up their online qualifications, in subjects of their choosing.”
Loughborough College’s Director of IT and Digital Chris Manton said: “All the laptops have got Windows installed and have wireless cards which means Carpenter’s Arms’s residents can access web-based platforms. I’m delighted that our donation will allow so many men to undertake online learning, including working towards their CSCS card – an important qualification for working in the Construction industry – as well as building confidence in using software such as Word and Excel, working on their CVs, searching for jobs, attending online interviews and, when the time comes, finding their next home.”
