“I’m not looking back at what I’ve lost but focusing on what’s ahead”
Jonny’s journey is a powerful example of personal transformation. After completing The Carpenter’s Arms recovery programme, Jonny became a dedicated volunteer with us, supporting others through their recovery process. His time with us was marked by a strong commitment to giving back and helping those facing similar struggles.
Jonny shares his experience:
“When I was born, my mother was terminally ill, and doctors didn’t expect her to survive my birth. Despite her illness, her faith in Jesus brought us through. Sadly, she lost her battle with epilepsy when I was 16. Shortly after, I also lost my grandfather and father, which left me struggling and living in an area known as ‘Heroin Heights.’”
In the face of these tragedies, Jonny battled addiction and found himself homeless on the streets of Stockton. It was during this time that he came into contact with the Moses Project, which proved to be a turning point. “I was begging outside a supermarket when they found me and helped me get into The Carpenter’s Arms. Their support and guidance were life changing.”
Jonny successfully completed the recovery programme at The Carpenter’s Arms, where he not only overcame his personal struggles but also discovered a passion for helping others. He became a volunteer support worker in Phase 1 of the programme and eventually took on the role of house dad in Phase 3. This opportunity gave him a sense of purpose and responsibility.
“I completed the programme and graduated. I became a volunteer support worker in Phase 1 and was living as a house dad in Phase 3 for five months. This role has given me purpose and the opportunity to support others on their recovery journey.”
Jonny reflects on his journey since moving forward from The Carpenter’s Arms and beginning a new chapter at the Teen Challenge TCLA School of Ministry. He explains, “Since coming here and starting a new season in my life, I’ve adjusted well. I guess I’m used to moving from place to place, but The Carpenter’s Arms was my home for about 18 months, and I do miss it.” Despite the change, Jonny has embraced his new surroundings and is building meaningful connections. “I’m making new friends here—brothers and sisters—and my relationship with the Lord is a lot stronger. My faith is growing every day, and I like doing outreach and helping the community. Maybe this is my calling?”
Jonny’s confidence continues to grow, particularly in areas such as preaching. “I’m getting more confident in delivering sermons and preaching in front of people, and I’m only getting stronger, which is good,” he says. “I have my bad days, but I talk it out with my friends and the pastor—though they can usually tell already. They’re really good here at getting around you and making you feel better, usually through prayer.”
Jonny has taken on exciting opportunities. “I’ve been asked to volunteer over the holidays, which is exciting, and I’ve been getting around to different venues with the Moses Project,” he shares. “I’m nearly halfway through my first term at the School of Ministry now, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.”
Jonny remains deeply appreciative of his time at The Carpenter’s Arms. “I’ll always be grateful to The Carpenter’s Arms for all the help and support they’ve given me. You guys are awesome. God bless you all.”
Jonny’s journey continues as he takes on new opportunities and grows in confidence. With his strengthened faith and the skills he’s developing at the Teen Challenge TCLA School of Ministry, he’s excited for what’s ahead. We’re proud to have been part of his story and look forward to seeing where his path leads next.
