To mark Self Esteem Month in February, we invited in Mayor of Charnwood Margaret Smidowicz to talk to our staff, volunteers and residents about the importance of self-worth and how it plays an important role in recovery.
The audience included 80 men in sobriety who are currently on the residential addiction recovery programme at The Carpenter’s Arms. Margaret covered a range of topics including overcoming anxiety, bullying and family issues.
Judith Spence, Director and co-founder at The Carpenter’s Arms, said:
“We’re very grateful that Margaret found time in her busy schedule to speak to our residents about such an important matter. She really hit the nail on the head with anecdotes that most of the audience related to.
“As well as being an elected member of Charnwood Borough Council, Margaret is also a Trustee of our charity, and has a powerful positive influence on our governance. Her experiences from her time as a Magistrate in family court and as a college lecturer only add to her wisdom.”
Feedback from the residents was very positive, with some commenting that it was very encouraging to be reminded that overcoming obstacles in your life can help you to achieve more than you imagined, or thought yourself worthy of.
